Mood Swings And Teenagers.

Do you suddenly feel sad and start weeping without knowing why? Or do you get frustrated for almost no reason? Or do you feel like to stay alone for a while as you lost up all your energy? Do only teenagers face these emotional tides every now and then? Firstly, We are going through a phase called Adolescence. Adolescence results in secretions of hormones like progesterone, estrogen and testosterone into the bloodstream resulting in fluctuation of these hormones and then leading to a series of abnormal emotional changes in behavior or mood swing.

What is a mood swing?

A mood swing is nothing but a change that can be noticed in one’s mood or emotional behavior.

Are these mood swings harmful?

In some cases, yes, they are and in some, no. But if you tend to experience irritable behavior, short temperedness, boredom, hopelessness, etc. you may need professional help as these are the early signs of depression. Even if you tend to get negative thoughts like killing or hurting yourself, try to speak to someone you trust or reach to an adult for further help.

Is there something that I can do to control these mood swings and stay happy?

Controlling mood swings can be tricky at first but once you get to know what to you should do, you are good to go. Here are some things which might help you to control these mood swings:

Meditate. Its not easy to meditate and I surely understand that but if you even try to close your eyes and sit quietly for 10-minutes straight, you might be able to calm yourself down.

You are not alone. There are many others, including me, who go through all this every day, so have a little hope that there is a way out of this.

Exercise. Even a little stroll or a jog around the park or a 5-minute workout session will help in release of hormones like serotonin and beta- endorphin which boosts your mood immediately.

Sleep. An average teenager should at least get 8 to 10 hours of sleep daily. If you ain’t giving your body the rest it needs, it won’t function as it is supposed to do.

Indulge in activities you love. Activities like painting sculpting, etc. distract your mind and makes you more creative and happy.

If you feel like crying, let that river flow. People say that boys don’t cry or grown ups don’t cry, but if they aren’t supposed to cry then why do they even have lacrimal glands for God’s sake.

Be quiet and try to be alone for a while. When you stay quiet and alone, you might be able to rediscover yourself, know about how you feel, try to understand better about how you should’ve behaved in that particular situation, etc.

Also remember, this is just a phase in life and will pass on its own. But don’t let it take over you, fight it and don’t lose hope.

Till then,

Stay happy! Love yourself! Stay healthy!
